News update and 2008-2009 Membership sign up

It is with regret I have to announce the departure of our current webmaster, Gooneh. New opportunities in his career have made maintenance of this site a task he is unable to commit to, to the level he would like. I would like to thank Gooneh publicly for all his great work for Arsenal Canada!! He can still be found trudging about in the forums of course! We’ve also posted the ‘want ad’ for the new webmaster postion in the forums so please have a look if this is a postion you feel you can contribute too.

As a result some of the changes we wanted to implement to the website, particularly with regards to sign up have not been realized in time. Please continue to sign up for your 2008-09 membership with the current system as we work to make some upgrades when possible.

Our membership package this season is going under some revisions as Arsenal Canada want to come out with a more polished package for all it’s members. The ‘kits’ as far as they are, should be ready for mail out by early October. I hope you like them.

In addition to the membership package, the executive is busy expanding our list of great volunteers across the country in as many centres as we can. Canada’s a big place and we know there are Gooners all over! Arguably the best feature of the Canadian supporters club is the access to tickets for home and away matches to see the Arsenal. Unfortunately not everyone can make it across the pond to see the club and we’re working at providing value to members across the country. In addition to discounted group merchandise orders and contests, we are working with regional reps to set up activities in the form of monthly planned events on chosen match days, most often the biggest matches on the fixture list, at pubs in various cities.

The Canadian supporters club is still very much growing and we need volunteers in many cities. If you’ve got a good base of fans in a city somewhere in Canada, please get in touch through the forums!

Thanks again for your continued support!

2008-2009 Membership Drive

With the new Barclay’s English Premier League season just around the corner, Arsenal Canada will be conducting it’s 2008-2009 annual membership drive. We will have a new sign up system in place shortly, in the first week of August and the renewals and new membership will run until the end of August. Of course we welcome new members at any time of year! For organization’s sake all memberships with Arsenal Canada will be up for renewal annually on August 31st of each year, regardless of when during the year a member signs up. (Remember, we’re all doing this in our spare time as volunteers!)

This years membership will remain at $13 for the season and we are working at revising the membership package to be a little flashier than in years past. The memberships should be ready to mail out sometime in September once the initial drive is complete.

On top of that, your annual membership is your best way to secure tickets to matches at the Emirates and Arsenal away matches in England and in Europe. But for those who can’t make the trip abroad, look for lots more events in the coming season and in your neighbourhood! We want you to make you feel as though you’re really part of something at Arsenal Canada. The executive has been working hard this summer to bring you bang for your $13

So come back soon and look for the announcement for the 2008-2009 membership drive! Remember to tell you Arsenal supporting friends. The bigger we can make this club the more we can bring you across Canada!

Thanks for your support!

Emirates Tournament / Feb Player of the Month

Time is rapidly running out for us to get together a team to enter the Arsenal Supporters Club tournament, the tournament takes place on the 18th May and we are allowed 7 players plus a non-playing manager. We have 3 players in place and need another 3 or 4 plus the non-playing manager.

The team is open to all paid-up members. Selection will be based on a few criteria if we have more than the required 8 applicants.
Generally, if there are more than 8 applicants the selection will be based on a random draw, giving members with seniority a bit of priority. There is one small catch before you book your plane ticket – we are not guaranteed a place in the tournament if it is over-subscribed then a draw takes place to see which clubs get to play on the hallowed turf.

It is important to note the players and manager are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.
Arsenal Canada is not guaranteed entrance into the tournament so please await confirmation of our acceptance before booking any travel arrangements. Please visit this forum for more information http://www.arsenalcanada.ca/forums/showthread.php?p=3678

In other news, the February Player of the month was once again Mr Adebayor. It’s two in a row for the Togonator. In the closest vote we’ve had to date, Ade edged out Jens Lehmann by one vote with Senderos, Eduardo, Hleb and Flamini all a further vote behind. Thanks to all who took part and watch out for our Player of the Year voting which is coming soon.

January Player of the Month

Emmanuel Adebayor has been voted Player of the Month for January by Arsenal Canada members. As has been said elsewhere, it’s a good job that Togo aren’t very good, it’s hard to imagine how we would have coped without the big man who is not just scoring goals but obviously enjoying every minute of it.

Arsenal Canada member redshark had this to say about Ade and his contribution:

Ade and his big goals and amazing hustle has made the difference. He has achieved consistency and a maturity in his game that is making him one of the top strikers in Europe. You gotta think that he will get better still and this should be very exciting for us fans!

Ade took home over 76% of the vote, miles ahead of Mathieu Flamini who also had a very good month.

Help Wanted!

Do you want to volunteer your services to be a part of one the greatest football clubs on this planet?

Here at Arsenal Canada we are looking to fulfill the position of Secretary. It has nothing to do with making tea or coffee, we don’t even have any tea or coffee, instead this is what we would be looking for:

The Secretary is responsible for communication with members, this would include:

  • release minutes of meetings
  • summarize member issues for discussion with appropriate members of the executive committee
  • release club guidelines and other club releases for publishing on the website

As Arsenal Canada continues to grow we are now spreading out across Canada, so the position is not restricted to any one area as our meetings are held online. If anyone is interested in the position or would like more information please contact the club at:

December Player of The Month

We are pleased to annouce that Manuel Almunia was recently voted Player of the Month for December by Arsenal Canada members. Almunia was the obvious choice for most, taking home nearly 63% of the votes. Forum member bgnewf had this to say about Manuel’s performances last month: “Almunia had what I feel was his coming out party last month…[he] made Lehmann finally expendable.”

Emmanuel Adebayor, our leading scorer at present, had an impressive month and finished runner-up in the poll.

Manuel receives word of his victory for December, either that or he has managed to lock Lehmann in the toilets again.

Happy New Year!

To all members across the land from everyone here at Arsenal Canada. Have a safe, great evening and we look forward to hearing from you in 2008

November player of the month

William Gallas was recently voted Player of the Month for November by Arsenal Canada members. Gallas took home nearly 64% of the votes, head and shoulders above anyone else. Forum member dvanderwax had this to say about Gallas’ contribution:

“He has been inspirational since he came back from injury, he is one of our major players and I think we would not be faring so well without him now… I just can’t picture him out of the side to be honest.”

Alex Hleb (October’s winner), Cesc Fabregas (September’s winner) and Bacary Sagna also deserve honourable mentions according to forum users.

The player of the month award is a “just for fun” award and no actual award as such is given from Arsenal Canada to the player, however Arsenal Canada does present a Player of the Year award at the end of every season and the monthly vote can help members see who has been the most consistent over the season.
