I'd say thats to help in his development as a CB, he's certainly not ready to play regularly in the 1st team and definitely not out of position......playing regularly for the Blades will do him good

I think all the players being loaned out is needed. The reserves fixture list is sparse and inconsitent. There can be months without a game in the reserve league. It has not been help by Sp*rs pulling out of the reserve south league, citing this exact problem that there are not enough games to make it worth it. They have instead loaned out their fringe players.
It has also been mentioned by another that reserve tilts are not always very intense, and there is much to be gained by playing in the championship league or the like. It also gets the young guns away from the comfy confines of the Arsenal facilities and discover how truely 1st class the Arsenal club in all facets is.

Darren, I like your point about finding out how much better Arsenal is than others by getting loaned out, but the reserve league doesn't have multi month gaps between fixtures. a couple of weeks, yes, but never more than 5 weeks between games.
Part of the reason that the Reserve lacks games is because there is so much youth international football, and because Call-ups are so regular.

The reserve does serve an important purpose and having it go by the wayside would destabilize English football in that players over 18 who are still developing would be forced to drop down to a lesser league vs train with the people they hope to become. Some teams in the championship play at a level not far off the EPL, some teams are miles below bar.

Also, for the most part, Arsenal players are loaned out locally so that they can practice with Arsenal a couple of times a week and be more closely monitored by the coaching staff at Arsenal. If players were only loaned out, then they would have to be shipped further away, like Bartley to Sheffield.

I understand the reason the Reserves lack games. Looking at the fixture list they only play 2 or 3 games a month. That only 1 game every 2 weeks, and that is shocking for a professional footballer. Heck, I hate having to wait a whole week to go out and play, what about these guys who don't get a game for months and all they do is train, train, train?
I agree the reserve league is an important piece in English football, but I also think guys like Lansbury, Wilshere etc are at the point in their careers that more games would be benefical for their development and the club is better able to see what they really have with these guys.
Good point about keeping them locally, I never thought about that and it totally makes sense.
